Cristiano Ronaldo set to double £175m-a-year Al-Nassr wages with new contract clause

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to double his £175million-a-year Al-Nassr wages by agreeing to meet a clause in his contract.

The 37-year-old forward completed his move to the Saudi Arabian side last week, joining on a free transfer following his exit from Manchester United in November. Ronaldo has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with Al-Nassr which will keep him at the club through until the summer of 2025, by which time he will be 40.

In addition to his reported £175million-per-year wages, Ronaldo could pocket the same amount again by supporting Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2030 World Cup alongside Egypt and Greece.

According to The Sun, the Portuguese striker will be paid an additional £175million if he agrees to promote the joint bid to host the tournament.

It is, however, currently unknown whether he would receive the payment in full all at once or if it would be paid in instalments alongside his weekly wages.

A spokesperson has since denied that Ronaldo has any involvement in Saudi Arabia’s World Cup bid, though, with the FA yet to confirm their intention to bid. All three nations have expressed an interest in bidding alongside each other for the hosting rights.

The bidding process is set to launch later this year before the host nation or nations are announced in 2024. Current confirmed bids include Morocco and a pair of joint bids from South American and European nations.

Ronaldo has openly discussed the welcome he has received since arriving in Saudi Arabia earlier this month, explaining: “I’m so proud to make this decision in my life and football. For me it’s a new challenge. I’m glad Al Nassr gave me this new opportunity.

“The welcome yesterday was amazing for me and my family and I’m already proud. When I take my decisions, my family always support me, especially my kids.

“I want to change the mentality of the new generation. I am so proud at making this big decision in my life and my career. My work in Europe is done. I played for all the most important clubs.”

He has yet to make his debut for his new club, though, after Al-Nassr were blocked from registering Ronaldo, having already met their quota for foreign players.

Whilst that issue has now been resolved with the departure of Vincent Aboubakar, Ronaldo is also currently serving a ban for slapping an autistic boy’s phone out of his hand after a match last season.
