Man Utd and Newcastle book places in Carabao Cup semi-finals after cagey affairs

Manchester United and Newcastle have both booked their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals following victories over Charlton and Leicester respectively.

Antony’s first half strike proved the difference-maker at Old Trafford, with the £80m summer signing curling in a gorgeous effort from the edge of the box to beat Addicks keeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer, while Marcus Rashford bagged two more in stoppage time.

Meanwhile, Dan Burn’s first goal for his boyhood club, which came at the end of an uncharacteristic solo run into the box, broke the deadlock in the second half against Leicester at St James’ Park, with Joelinton doubling their lead shortly after.

On Wednesday, the two clubs will learn who they’ll face in the next round, with tournament favourites Manchester City taking on Southampton at St Mary’s and Nottingham Forest welcoming Wolves to the City Ground.

The win for United is their eighth in a row, with Erik ten Hag’s side very much in the ascendancy since club football returned following the World Cup break.

With Cristiano Ronaldo gone, the Red Devils seem to finally have a skip in their step and appear to have put their early season wobbles behind them.

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe’s Magpies have bounced back after their shock FA Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday over the weekend, which came following two goalless draws in the Premier League.
