Serie A side rehire manager 48 hours after sacking him over 8-2 humiliation

Serie A club Salernitana have rehired their manager just 48 hours after sacking him.

Head coach Davide Nicola was on the receiving end of an 8-2 battering at Atalanta on Sunday. The 49-year-old was unsurprisingly dismissed after a run of poor form which culminated in the dismal display.

Salernitana president Danilo Iervolino looked to the likes of Rafa Benitez and Leonardo Semplici as potential successors. But after failing to reach an agreement over a deal with his candidates, Iervolino decided to phone Nicola and offer him his former job in a sensational twist.

Nicola explained on his Facebook page: “I will tell you the truth. I received a call from President Iervolino yesterday.

“With his methods, which are always lovely and friendly, he explained to me the reasons for his painful decision which he had to take to highlight discontinuity after a bad defeat against Atalanta in Bergamo.

“I apologised, taking responsibility for a performance that was not adequate and the resulting heavy defeat. I believe in this team and its men and this great club.”

The Granata currently sit 16th in Serie A – nine points clear of the relegation zone. Yet the Salerno-based side have failed to win any of their last six fixtures, losing four along the way.

Davide Nicola will take charge against Napoli

Nicola continued: “I strongly demanded the President reconsider his decision knowing to deal with a human soul that has a deep sensitivity to understanding and strongly wants to build a different football. I love Salerno and strongly believe in this project.

“’The President has always given us passion, personality and desire to reach impossible targets. He firmly believes that when men push in the same direction, they can do extraordinary things.

“I thank the President for calling me; this means that the new football is made of passion and heart, and I want to repay his trust with all my love.”

He will next face the monumental task of playing league leaders Napoli, who are currently on their way to cementing a first Scudetto since 1990 with Diego Maradona.
