Fans slam Atletico defender Savic as ‘f***ing idiot’ after picking up another red card

Atletico Madrid fans have been tearing into Stefan Savic after he picked up his second red card of 2023.

Fierce rivals Real Madrid knocked Diego Simeone’s side out of the Copa Del Rey by securing a 3-1 victory after extra-time. Before Savic’s moment of madness, the 231st Madrid derby was pleasingly equal.

A wonderful individual goal from Rodrygo cancelled out Alvaro Morata’s first half strike in what was a very entertaining and hard fought contest. However, three weeks after his silly red card against Barcelona, Savic’s extra time dismissal completely changed the game, as Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior – who was targeted with horrific racist abuse before the match – both found the net to secure a place in the semi-final.

Savic’s trouble began when he was shown a yellow card for time wasting in the early stages of extra-time. But moments after being turned inside out and back to front by Vinicius, Savic completely lost his composure.

Despite appearing to be shepherding him into a blind alley, Savic hauled Eduardo Camavinga down and earned himself a second yellow card. His dismissal completely changed the course of the contest as Real Madrid imposed themselves back on their local rivals.

“A red. Savic is an idiot. The man was going nowhere,” one fan wrote on the internet. “Savic is an idiot when you think Camavinga was going nowhere,” another added. While a third simply wrote: “savic is a f***ing idiot.”

“Savic got embarrassed and decided to leave the game,” laughed another fan, who was referencing the moment Vinicius Jr dazzled the Montenegro international with his feet. One particularly angry Atletico supporter also commented: “Savic. Such an idiot, these Atleti defenders. And he actually had a great game until that point.”

Despite the careless and, quite frankly, ridiculous nature of the red card, Simeone directed his anger towards the referee instead of the former Manchester City defender. The Argentine believed Ceballos should have also been shown a red card after he made a similar foul while also already on a yellow card.

“What happened to Ceballos was crucial to the outcome. It seems nobody cares, but it’s the reality,” Simeone said after the game. “But we fought well. I don’t know if the referee has a personal problem with Morata because he didn’t give him a single foul all night.”
