‘I sat in darkness for an hour for National Grid pay back scheme – they paid me 6p’

National Grid’s pay back scheme has come under fire from a flurry of Britons, with claims that just 6p was lopped off of an energy bill after an hour of darkness.

In the hopes of preventing power blackouts, members of the public could opt into a scheme that sees their energy bills reduced.

But one person to take part in the National Grid plan found they would only be given 6p for their hour of total darkness, despite a promise of a £20 rebate.

Some took to social media and complained of the disastrously small discount they would receive after an hour without power.

One woman alleged that she signed up for the scheme and for a session where she reduced her energy by 62%, she received just 6p.

Jodie Kenny, 30, asked what the point of it all was after a second stint on the scheme saw a 41p offer after cutting her energy usage by 70%.

Speaking to Independent, Kenny, from Washington in the North East, said that while not in “dire straits” when it came to cash, the National Grid scheme appeared to be offering money for nothing.

Over five sessions carried out by Kenny, she received a total of £1.89, with her E.ON readings showing the savings made and energy cut.

E.ON representatives did say however that customers were paid, on average, £1.72 for their energy saving claims, although some did make more than £10.

A spokesperson for E.ON said: “The exact amount for individual homes depends on how much energy they are able to save compared to their usual consumption. The more they can reduce their energy use, the more they will save.

“It’s early days but so far, we’ve paid out around £350,000 to customers who’ve met their reduction targets, and that number will continue to grow.”

Another E.ON customer, Geoff Wood, took to Twitter and claimed he received just 84p for cutting his energy usage by 89%.
