  • Emergency services were called to reports of an industrial accident at 1.10pm
  • Four fire engines, 25 firefighters and multiple ambulances attended the scene
  • The man was trapped underneath a hydraulic urinal, which he was working on

A man has died after being crushed by a hydraulic urinal in London‘s West End on this afternoon, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 1.10pm at the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross road outside the Palace Theatre in London’s theatre district, after reports of an industrial accident involving a public urinal. 

Firefighters managed to free the man with a winch before he was taken into the care of ambulance crews shortly before he died. 

London Ambulance Service said: ‘Sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a man died at the scene.’  

An air ambulance was seen landing in Trafalgar Square while a large number of ambulances and fire engines attended the scene.

A crane was brought to the scene in an attempt by rescuers to lift the entire device out of the ground.

Met Police told MailOnline: ‘Police were called at around 13:10hrs on Friday, 27 January, to a seriously injured man at Cambridge Circus, W1.

‘The man is thought to have sustained crush injuries while working on a “telescopic urinal” at the location.

‘LFB, LAS and London’s Air Ambulance are in attendance. Officers are assisting with road closures.’

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called today (27 January) at 1:05pm to reports of an incident on Shaftesbury Avenue, Charing Cross.

‘We sent a number of resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, members of our hazardous area response team (HART), members of our tactical response unit and a medic in a fast response car. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.’

The incident has taken place near The Palace Theatre, which is where Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is performed

The incident took place outside of The Palace Theatre, where the stage show of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is performed. 

Currently the theatre is unsure whether tonight’s 7pm performance will take place.

A spokesperson for the theatre’s stage door department said: ‘At this point we don’t have the information to give out to people and it is an ongoing situation. We will try and give as much notice as possible’

London Fire Brigade told MailOnline: ‘Firefighters have been called to a person trapped on Charing Cross Road in central London.

‘The man trapped under street level under a hydraulic urinal on Cambridge Circus has been freed. He has been left in the care of the Ambulance Service.

‘The Brigade was called at 1305. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Soho, Euston and Dowgate fire stations are at the scene.’

It is thought that the man was working on a pop-up urinal which rises from the pavement for those out in London at night.
