Marcelo Bielsa offered to coach Everton youth side before taking charge of first team

Marcelo Bielsa was willing to work with Everton’s U21s for the remainder of the season to land the Toffees job in the summer.

But the Blues are now set to hire Sean Dyche as permanent boss. Bielsa, 67, flew into London from Brazil on Thursday to hold talks with club owner Farhad Moshiri and the board.

It was clear the Argentine boss had concerns about the state of the club and the first-team squad. He felt he would need seven weeks to get the first-team playing to his way with the standards he would set.

But with the Toffees second from bottom in the Premier League, there was too much risk that they would be cut adrift in the fight for survival by then.

The former Leeds boss offered a proposal where he would come in – with up to eight backroom staff members – and work with the U21s team now before taking over the senior side in June.

That would allow him to get his methods over to the younger players and ensure he had a good vision on which of them could be promoted to the first-team for next season.

Marcelo Bielsa won’t be Everton’s next manager

But it was decided that it was an unworkable position and Everton’s focus must be on getting the right man in to oversee their fight to beat the drop now.

Dyche, 51, would not be willing to be an interim manager and wants the chance to prove himself in the Premier League.

He believes he is the right man to keep Everton up but then also build next season if they are still in the top tier.

Marcelo Bielsa said he needed seven weeks to sort out the Everton first team

Dyche was sacked by Burnley last April as the Clarets slid towards relegation. He enjoyed 10 years at Turf Moor where he won two promotions and qualified for the Europa League.

He could be announced as the new Toffees boss as early as today but talks are still being finalised in London.

Everton want their new manager in before the end of the weekend as they look to make some January signings with the window closing on Tuesday night.
