‘New Everton manager’ Sean Dyche is a Liverpool fan who worships Kenny Dalglish

Incoming Everton manager Sean Dyche once admitted he was a passionate Liverpool fan who looked up to Kenny Dalglish.

The former Burnley manager appears to be the man entrusted with jump-starting the Toffees’ fledgling campaign, after Frank Lampard was shown the door at Goodison Park. Everton are currently languishing in 19th position, two points adrift of safety, in what is very quickly becoming a disastrous season.

Dyche certainly has quite the task ahead of him as the mood on Merseyside has never been so low. And he may have to try and fix the Toffees from a position of relative weakness, as he used to support fierce rivals Liverpool.

“I was a Seventies kid so I supported Liverpool,” Dyche told LadBible, when asked who he supported as a youngster “My local Kettering, Kettering Town, me and my dad used to go down and watch them, they were pretty big in the non-league scene but Liverpool from a distance.”

Dyche also went on to convey his admiration for Liverpool legend and former boss Dalglish, who was one of his childhood heroes. “Got to be King Kenny,” he added, when asked who his favourite player was.

“[I] met him in the most bizarre circumstances because I’m obviously a man and he treats you like a man in football. But, in my brain I’m going, ‘you’re King Kenny’, and he’s just chatting to me going, ‘oh alright, Burnley are going alright’, and I’m still going ‘you’re King Kenny’, in my head.

Dyche one admitted he was starstruck when he first met Kenny Dalglish

“Weirdly, I was in the Championship and he was at a Preston game, can’t remember why he was there. He was just there and tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘alright Sean’.

“I met him another time when I was at Anfield. It’s just that weird thing they say don’t meet your heroes but Kenny is a proper legend.” While his previous admiration of Liverpool will not see him receive the same treatment as former Reds’ boss Rafael Benitez, it is still not the strongest of foundations.

However, considering Everton’s recent form and lowly league position, the Toffees may be in a ‘beggars can’t be choosers’ scenario. And when it comes to getting teams out of the relegation zone, very few are better and more experienced than Sean Dyche.
