UK boxing boost as Tyson Fury’s promoter gives update on venue for Oleksandr Uysk fight

Boxing fanatics in the UK have been given fresh hope that Tyson Fury will face Oleksandr Usyk at Wembley Stadium following an update from the star’s co-promoter.

After months of negotiations, a deal for the blockbuster unification bout appears close, but a date and venue has yet to be confirmed. Saudi Arabia has long been touted as the most likely option, given the huge financial incentives on offer for both fighters.

America is currently out of the question for Fury, amid his ban from entering the country over his ties to crime lord Daniel Kinahan. But now Bob Arum has teased the prospect of the clashing coming to London’s most famous stadium, where Fury notched a clinical KO win over Dillian Whyte last April.

“I think both of the fighters have agreed to the fight, I think the question is where the site will be,” the American told Sky Sports. “That will be sorted out hopefully next week and we’ll have an announcement shortly.

“If the fight goes to the Middle East it will be sometime after Ramadan and if the fight is in the UK it will be the beginning of April,” he added. “It depends what the deals are and so forth”

Given late March to early April has been provisionally touted as the window for the heavyweight showdown, Arum’s latest update appears a significant one. But he did warn that money, and not fan power, would ultimately decide matters: “There are a number of us that would prefer the fight to be in Wembley, but again it depends on the money,” he added.

“The fighters have a very short limit of their careers and they have to make whatever money, particularly large amounts of money, because in a few years it’s not going to be available. I just think it’s going to be a tremendous fight.”

The psychological battle between the two champions is already well underway, with Usyk recently appearing to fat shame Fury with pictures of his new, leaner physique. ‘The Gypsy King’ has long goaded his Ukrainian rival by labelling him a ‘middleweight’ boxer.

‘The Cat’ has stepped up to heavyweight level for his last two clashes with Anthony Joshua. In August, he outpointed ‘AJ’ in Jeddah, paving the way for a unification bout with Fury.
