Motor racing chaos as 10 cars are involved in huge pile-up with two going airborne

A Formula Regional race got the wrong kind of lift-off on Friday with 10 cars involved in a massive early crash.

Within a matter of seconds at the Kuwait Motor Town, two drivers in the 27-strong field were sent airborne in their vehicles, with many more caught up in the chaos that ensued. Miraculously, those involved in the harrowing scene escaped unscathed.

As cars tried to take the corner five abreast, trouble was inevitable and Joshua Duerksen was sent up into the air after colliding with one of the PHM racing cars. As a result, his car was sandwiched with his Hyderabad Blackbirds team-mate Sami Meguetounif.

But worse was to follow moments later. Brad Benavides made high-speed contact with the Hitech GP of Gabriele Mini, and turned over in the air before landing on top of several cars.

He proceeded to ride for several seconds upside-down on top of his Hyderabad Blackbirds team-mate Mari Boya, before flipping back over and mercifully, coming to a standstill in the gravel.

And it wasn’t just cars that made contact left in trouble, with a number of others forced to come to a complete stop to avoid a collision of their own.

On commentary, pundits described the carnage as “a complete mess”, but were able to later confirm that all drivers involved had escaped injury. A lengthy safety car period followed the incident, but once the debris was removed the action began again.

Still the problems weren’t over though. Red Bull junior Sebastian Montoya had started 18th on the grid but then was seemingly given a gift by by elevating himself up to fourth. But he too then failed to finish following another incident later in the race.

In the end Dino Beganovic seized the moment. He had started ninth and managed to stay out of trouble while another benficiary was Luke Browning, who was crowned Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year in December, who was eighth on his debut in the series.

The Formula Regional Middle East Championship features a mix of professional and amateur drivers, competing in Formula Regional cars. This is the inaugural season of the championship, with the Kuwait leg the second of five events.
