‘Magic of the FA Cup’ sees BBC accidentally show Wrexham fan’s ‘f*** the Tories’ sign

Fans were left amused after BBC Sport accidentally showed a supporter holding up a ‘F*** the Tories’ sign during their broadcast of Wrexham’s clash with Sheffield United.

The FA Cup fourth round tie at the Racecourse Ground was chosen for live television in the prime Sunday slot with kick-off at 4:30pm. Optimism is running high at Wrexham as they continue their journey under their ambitious Hollywood owners – actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

So much so that one hopeful fan brought along the customary homemade cut-out of a FA Cup, complete with tin foil wrapping and red ribbons. But the young dreamer included an added extra on his mock trophy, sticking a handwritten ‘F*** the Tories’ sign front and centre.

Yet despite its obvious placement, BBC cameras clearly hadn’t noticed. During a break in play, the cameras panned round the stadium filming various fans in the stands, until they come to the explicit FA Cup-holding fan, who waved his masterpiece in full view of those recording.

A number of fans shared the clip and images on social media, and were very much on the same page with their responses, filing the hilarious moment under ‘Magic of the FA Cup’.

Reynolds was certainly getting in the spirit of things before kick-off, joining BBC presenter Gary Lineker and pundits Alan Shearer and Mark Hughes to discuss all things Wrexham. “Do you get nervous watching?” Lineker asked, to which Reynolds replied: “Of course I get nervous – I get about 10,000 steps in each match walking up and down and pacing around like a caged lion.

“I get nervous because a match like today, Sheffield United are three leagues above us, 70 teams above us, this is an extraordinary moment, classic David and Goliath.” Lineker chimed in: “You’ll hear a phrase – ‘This is what the FA Cup is all about’.”

Reynolds replied: “This is what the FA Cup is all about, that’s where I’m going with this. It’s a classic David vs Goliath story but you guys know this more than anybody on earth that this is football, this is the beautiful game and absolutely anything can happen.” With tongue firmly in cheek, he added: “And I think – I’m gonna put it on record right now that there’s a chance, albeit a very slim chance that Sheffield United pulls off a miracle today.”
