Striker hurls ball at goalkeeper after genius opponent ‘channels inner Jose Mourinho’
Football fans have been left in hysterics after a striker’s angry reaction to a quick-thinking goalkeeper’s cunning yet slightly underhanded tactics – which led to comparisons with Jose Mourinho.
FC Twente hosted league leaders Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie on Sunday in a clash which eventually finished all square at 1-1. Joshua Brenet’s goal cancelled out Santiago Gimenez’s opener for the visitors at the De Grolsch Veste stadium – but it was a hilarious incident in the first half which has stolen the limelight.
Twente forward Virgil Misidjan was haring rapidly down the wing close to the touchline as his side mounted an attack, when out of nowhere, Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow came sliding across to put the ball out of play. It was a perfectly-timed intervention, but Bijlow was immediately aware he was stranded out of his goal, while Misidjan picked up the ball to take a throw-in.

Quick as a flash, Bijlow jumped to his feet and ran off the pitch, before grabbing one of the spare balls by the side of the pitch and throwing it back onto the field. The game cannot resume with more than one ball on the pitch, thus thwarting Misidjan’s hopes of catching the Feyenoord stopper out.
It was gamesmanship at its finest, but Misidjan didn’t take too kindly to Bijlow’s scheming and reacting angrily by throwing the ball he was holding at his opponent, though it hit the turf before missing its intended target.
Supporters were highly amused by the incident, with one writing: “Funniest exchange on the pitch I’ve seen in a while. The player was lividddd.” Though many were also impressed at Bijlow’s awareness to pull off such a move. “That goalkeeper is wise,” one fan wrote on Twitter, while another labelled him a “genius” as others praised his IQ.

Bijlow’s wily conduct also earned him comparisons with Roma boss Mourinho, who is renowned for his sly tactics and win-at-all-costs mentality. One fan posted a picture of the ex-Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager, along with the caption: “Goalkeeper be like.”
Another Twitter user showed their appreciation by posting an image of Mourinho from an old press conference with one of his famous quotes: “This is football heritage.”
The two players were then involved in a heated exchange and Bijlow was booked for his efforts, though he’ll no doubt feel that’s a small price to pay for avoiding a potential goal and certain embarrassment. Jose would be proud.
