Gennaro Gattuso sacked after completely losing his cool while talking to frustrated fans

Gennaro Gattuso has been sacked as Valencia manager after losing his cool with frustrated fans.

The Italian joined the club on a two-year deal back in June with the hope of stopping Valencia’s downward trajectory. But Gattuso, who previously managed AC Milan and Napoli, was unable to turn the tide at the Mestalla with his side sitting 14th in La Liga.

And he has now been axed after just seven months in the job following a 1-0 defeat away at Real Valladolid. Yet another defeat meant Valencia’s last league win came back in November, with Gattuso winning just five of his 18 La Liga matches in charge.

The announcement came just hours after he was filmed lashing out at a cameraman following the defeat. Gattuso and his returning squad touched down in Valencia on Sunday, where they were met by passionate fans offering words of support.

Footage showed the World Cup winner talking to one fan, where he could be heard saying: “Right now it’s not a problem for the boys.” But the hot-tempered ex-midfielder suddenly lost his cool after noticing a camera in his face.

An angry Gattuso pushed the camera away before gesturing angrily at the cameraman. Footage from another angle also captured the push, as well as showing Gattuso berating the man.

The club apologised for the incident, according to Valencian outlet A Punt, before going on to announce his sacking on Monday night.

A club statement read: “Valencia CF announces that this Monday, January 30, the club and the first team coach, Gennaro Gattuso, have decided by mutual agreement to end the contractual relationship that united the Italian coach with the VCF.

“The Club wants to thank the coach for his commitment and work in these months in charge of the first team and wish him the best of luck in his future. The team will return to training this Tuesday, January 31, under the orders of ‘Voro’ Gonzalez.”
