Shania Twain recalls being airlifted to the hospital after contracting Covid pneumonia and struggling to breathe: ‘It was progressively getting worse’
Shania Twain shared her very scary experience with Covid pneumonia, which got so bad that she had to be air-evacuated to a hospital for treatment.
The Queen of Country Pop, 57, revealed that after getting sick during the height of the pandemic she was struggling to breathe at which point her husband Frédéric Thiébaud, 53, organized an air lift from their home in Lake Geneva, Switzerland.
‘It was progressively getting worse. My vital signs were getting worse… and in the end I had to be air evacuated,’ the star — who recently opened up about the childhood sexual abuse she experienced — told The Mirror in a new interview.

The That Don’t Impress Me Much hitmaker described the helicopter ride as ‘going to another planet.’
‘It was like science fiction, I felt like I was going to another planet or something. It all kind of happened in slow motion,’ she said.
Twain revealed that her husband was ‘freaking out’ and frantically trying to find her a free hospital bed, which were very limited during that time.

‘He spent hours and hours every day on the phone, trying to get an air evacuation coordinated, trying to get a bed lined up, as there were none, checking my vital signs. It was just a real nightmare for him,’ she explained.
After she got to the hospital the songstress was put in isolation and then treated with plasma therapy.
‘It took several days to start building up any antibodies at all, so it was a very dangerous time and very scary,’ she remembered, adding, ‘I made it through and I’m just so grateful.’

She also expressed her gratitude for her husband, to whom she’s been married since 2011: ‘I thought, “Wow, if I was living alone in a more isolated scenario, I don’t know what would have happened”. My heart goes out to people who don’t have that support to help them get the right care.’
The health battle had such a big impact on Twain she even wrote a song titled Inhale/Exhale Air about it, for her upcoming sixth studio album, Queen Of Me, which is set to be released on February 3.
‘It’s a song of gratitude and appreciation,’ she says. ‘I was inspired that I still had air in my lungs.’

Elsewhere in the interview she also touched on the horrific sexual abuse abuse she experienced as a child at the hands of her stepfather Jerry Twain.
‘When I was fondled as a child, it made me retreat from ever wanting to grow into being a woman. I hated my body,’ she said.
That’s why she decided to face her feelings and pose nude in the artwork for her new album: ‘I went into the most uncomfortable scenario I could think of, which was a photoshoot without my clothes on. And that’s what I did. I just faced it head-on.’
‘It’s probably something I should have done much earlier in my life but it feels like I’ve turned a corner – a very important one. It’s about self-empowerment and taking charge of your fears.’
New tunes: Her upcoming sixth studio album, Queen Of Me – set to be released on February 3 – will feature a song titled Inhale/Exhale Air about the scary health ordeal
