Bruno Guimaraes given straight red card by VAR for tackle ‘lucky not to break ankle’

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes was given a straight red card for a ferocious tackle on Southampton ace Samuel Edozie.

The Brazilian has been a breath of fresh air ever since he joined the club last year. However, he surged through Edozie’s ankle like a hurricane, leaving the youngster in a heap on the floor at St James’ Park.

Surprisingly, the former Lyon midfielder was not immediately sent for an early shower by referee Paul Tierney, who originally opted for a yellow card. However, after consulting VAR, Tierney upgraded the caution to a straight red card.

Edozie and Guimaraes both charged in for a loose ball around 30 yards from Newcastle’s goal. However, Edozie managed to beat the Brazilian international to the ball, putting his body between ball and player.

However, all he succeeded in doing was putting himself in harm’s away. As Guimaraes tried to take the ball, his foot was rather high and every single one of his studs were planted in the back of Edozie’s legs. Co-commentator Ally McCoist was particularly shocked, saying Edozie was “very lucky he has not broken his ankle.”

Fortunately for the Magpies, it did not have any major result on the score as they were firmly in the driving seat. Sean Longstaff’s brace afforded Eddie Howe’s side a three goal cushion on aggregate.

While Che Adams’ fine effort from 25-yards ensured a slightly nervous conclusion for the Toon, Newcastle were in firm control. Magpies’ supporters will also be relieved to hear Guimaraes will not be suspended for the League Cup Final.

Guimaraes will be relieved when he finds out he doesn’t miss the final

Any suspensions from yellow cards and red cards are carried over into the Premier League. He will have to sit out of the Magpies’ clashes against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Liverpool.

Many Newcastle fans may be nervous about the prospect of being without the midfield magician for those matches, with their bid for Champions League qualification still alive and well. However, considering Newcastle are without a major trophy since 1955, many fans, even if they do not want to admit it themselves, may be mildly relieved he will not miss the final.
