Chelsea agree deal to complete British record transfer for Enzo Fernandez just in time

Chelsea have agreed a deal to complete the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for a British record transfer fee.

Fernandez, who had been on the west London club’s radar for some time, joined the Blues just before the January window slammed shut. He becomes their seventh arrival of a busy and expensive month that began with French defender Benoit Badiashile moving to Stamford Bridge from Monaco for £35million.

Ivory Coast forward David Fofana then joined from Molde for £7million, before Andrey Santos swapped Brazil and Vaszo de Gama for the King’s Road at a cost of £18million.

Fellow forward Mykhailo Mudryk became Chelsea’s fourth acquisition of the window, moving from Shakhtar Donetsk for £62million after the Blues saw off competition from Arsenal for his signature. And 20-year-old star Noni Madueke made it five just over a week ago for £29million from PSV.

Malo Gusto took Chelsea’s spending in January to over £175million after he joined from Lyon on Sunday. But Fernandez’s arrival has seen the Blues break the £275million barrier as Boehly and Graham Potter continue their refresh of the squad.

Graham Potter has completely reshaped Chelsea’s squad this month

The 22-year-old Argentina international has only made 29 appearances for Benfica, scoring four goals and registering seven assists. Before that he played for Defensa y Justicia and River Plate in his native Argentina.

It was at the World Cup where he shot to stardom, as Fernandez’s performances earned plaudits from across the globe as he helped Lionel Messi and Co win the World Cup. The youngster had been linked with a move to the Prem, but it took until the 11th hour for Chelsea to make their move.

Fernandez will add to Chelsea’s expensive campaign as they look to turn around their torrid campaign.
