Darts star Joe Cullen likes tweets hitting out at Premier League line-up after missing out

Darts star Joe Cullen has hit out at the PDC’s selection for this year’s Darts Premier League.

The world No.12 was selected for last year’s tournament by winning the Masters and showed his worth by reaching the competition’s final. Cullen pushed eventual winner Michael van Gerwen all the way in the final and had the chance to win the coveted title but missed the final double by inches with his Dutch opponent prevailing.

After going so close to winning last year Cullen, nicknamed The Rockstar, said it was a ‘kick in balls’ not to be one of the four selected again this year.

Despite his Premier League exploits, Cullen failed to impress at the major tournaments last year after his Masters win and was beaten in the last 16 at the World Championship.

Defending his Masters crown last weekend, Cullen lost to eventual winner Chris Dobey in the second round and ended his last chance of putting himself in the mind of selectors. It was revealed on Monday that Dobey had been selected for the 17-week Premier League series along with Johnny Clayton, Nathan Aspinall and Dimitri Van den Bergh.

Fans agreed with Cullen that he deserved another Premier League chance after going so close last year. In a tweet liked by the darts star @stevenbatey96 said: Outrageous that last year’s FINALIST @rockstar_13_ isn’t even in the tournament this year. Poor show from @OfficialPDC.

Four players earn automatic qualification to the lucrative series from their world ranking – world champion Michael Smith, Peter Wright, van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price. However, the remaining players had to wait until Monday to discover their fate despite the tournament beginning on Thursday. Cullen also liked the tweet of @joshpearson180 who said: “PDC really made us wait a whole month to drop the worst PL lineup imaginable”

Cullen is among several darts stars who felt they deserved a place in the tournament including Luke Humphries and Rob Cross with fans left bemused by the selected quartet. The selection of world No.11 Van den Bergh was also questioned by fans with the 28-year-old not making a major final last year.

In a further tweet liked by Cullen @joshpearson180 added: “How’s dimi found his way into the premier league then.”
