Arsenal ace Nuno Tavares sets up brutally unlucky own goal with mazy run for loan club

Arsenal left-back Nuno Tavares set-up a goal for loan club Olympique Marseille though the defender was very unfortunate.

Portuguese defender Tavares was sent on loan to Marseille at the start of the season after falling behind Kieran Tierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko in the pecking order. He had a chequered start to life at the Emirates with many glimpses of potential being over-shadowed by some costly mistakes and poor performances, particular his nightmare display against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup last season.

However, he appears to be enjoying his time with Ligue 1 giants Marseille, as was demonstrated in his wonderful ‘assist’ against Nantes.

He received the ball with his back towards goal, approximately 50 yards away. Tavares then sharply turned away and sprinted through the heart of the Nantes midfield on his way to goal.

The left-back then demonstrated his improved composure by slowing down the play, before slipping former Leicester City winger Cengiz Under through on goal. While the Turkish international did not put the finishing touch on a breathtaking passage of play, Nantes defender Joao Victor put the ball in his own net by sliding in and directing the ball past his own goalkeeper’s legs.

It was fortuitous, but considering the hard yards Tavares put in, it was very much deserved. With performances like that, Tavares may find himself in a position of choosing between staying at Marseille or returning to Arsenal.

“At Arsenal, I do not know if it was a problem of competition with Kieran Tierney, but for me, that’s not even the point,” Tavares told French outlet RMC Sport, Shortly after his arrival at the French giants.

Tavares was sent on loan after he struggled in his first season at the club

“I came to Marseille to finally be able to play in my position. When signing with OM, I wanted to have an option to buy, but Arsenal refused. With my agents, we always wanted this purchase option, but Arsenal didn’t.

“Now I’m at OM, and with or without an option, I’m happy. At Arsenal, I would have probably only played in the cup. I came to Marseille to play in my position, in the Champions League, in the league and in the cup [competition]. Marseille gave me this opportunity.”
