Tom Brady kept retirement plans hidden for a week but he let the secret slip

The retirement of Tom Brady has sent waves around the sporting world, but not everyone was caught off guard.

On Wednesday morning, the legendary quarterback released a video confirming he was walking away from the NFL for a second and ‘final’ team, following a stellar career which saw him win seven Super Bowl titles. That was despite a move back to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers being widely touted.

Since the post, tributes have flooded in for the 45-year-old, who in return has lauded a host of figures who contributed to his career. But it seems plans for the announcement were already in place prior to the day of its release.

According to The Boston Globe, Brady’s own parents were made aware of his decision a week before the video went out to his three million Twitter followers: “We’re not shocked by any means,” said Tom Brady Snr. “He has played football for 32 years out of his 45, living his dream for three-fourths of his life. It’s been a wonderful ride. He’s very secure in his decision.”

NFL Network reporter Peter Schrager also claimed that the video posted was actually filmed long before the Wednesday morning upload: “Per sources close to Brady, the video posted this AM was filmed prior to this morning,” he tweeted. “Kept this one awfully quiet.”

Speaking more in-depth on the Good Morning Football show, Schrager added: “That was filmed a while ago. He was at an LA premiere Tuesday night, doing the movie premiere. The sun is not up in LA as you see there. So that is a taping, that means he has known this and has kept this quiet for at least 48 hours.”

Tom Brady made an emotional 53-second social media video announcing his retirement “for good” from the NFL

In his address, released a year to the day after his initial retirement, Brady was blunt and yet emotional in his short message: “Good morning guys. I’ll get to the point right away. I’m retiring, for good,” he insisted.

‘I know the process was a pretty big deal last time so when I woke up this morning I figured I’d just press record and let you guys know first. It won’t be long-winded. You only get one super emotional retirement essay and I used mine up last year, so… really, thank you guys so much to every single one of you for supporting me.”

He went on to say he had lived “his absolute dream.” As well as his seven Super Bowl wins, six of which came with the New England Patriots and one with Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brady also won the MVP award on three occasions.
