BREAKING Leeds sack Jesse Marsch with club above Premier League drop zone on goal difference

Leeds United have sacked Jesse Marsch with the club teetering on the edge of the Premier League relegation zone.

The Whites are without a win in seven top-flight matches and now find themselves above the bottom-three on goal difference. The Elland Road side suffered another damaging defeat on Sunday, going down 1-0 to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

That spelled the end of the road for Marsch, who only replaced Marcelo Bielsa in March 2022. Leeds confirmed the departure of their head coach in a statement on Monday afternoon.

It read: “Leeds United can confirm head coach Jesse Marsch has been relieved of his duties. Jesse joined the club in February 2022 and was instrumental in keeping the club in the Premier League on the final day of last season.

“Rene Maric, Cameron Toshack and Pierre Barrieu will also leave the club. We would like to thank Jesse and his backroom staff for their efforts and wish them well for the future.

“The process of appointing a new head coach is underway and we will continue to keep supporters up to date throughout the coming days.”

Leeds lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on Sunday

The American succeeded in keeping Leeds in the Premier League at the end of last season as they finished three points above Burnley.

But just four wins in 20 Premier League games this season has seen the axe fall on Marsch, despite Leeds backing him with four new signings in the January transfer window.

Leeds are now looking for a new manager to arrest a miserable run of form that has seen them go without a victory since before the mid-season break for the winter World Cup.

Marsch replaced Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds boss

The club’s next appointment will likely take charge after the next batch of games, which sees Leeds face tricky back-to-back matches against old rivals Manchester United on Wednesday and Sunday.

Speculation is already rife over who will replace the 49-year-old, with former coach Bielsa mentioned among the club’s fans. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, a return for the Argentine is considered unlikely at this stage.
