Scottish Premiership duo play rock, paper, scissors over free-kick – and regret it

St Johnstone team-mates Cammy MacPherson and Graham Carey had the perfect solution to their free-kick debate in the Scottish Premiership at the weekend.

Both desperate to hand their side a route back into the game against runaway league leaders Celtic, MacPherson and Carey stood over a free-kick and vied for supremacy.

Instead of butting heads and arguing, the pair used the traditional hand game for two with MacPherson coming out on top with an inspired paper to Carey’s rock after an all-scissor draw.

Trailing 3-1 in the 72nd minute, MacPherson came out the winner but smashed his effort into the wall – with Celtic going on to win 4-1.

The Scottish midfielder even comically out his hands on his head as the shot came to nothing, with St Johnstone staying eighth in the table.

Reacting on Twitter, one fan wrote: “How it should be done in my book.”

A second agreed: “That’s brilliant.”

A third said: “Went well too….what a load of s****e this is!”

With a fourth pointing out: “Better like this than someone comes and say: it’s mine!”

Rock, paper, scissors has not always got such a good reception in football, with WSL ref David McNamara suspended after using the game instead of a coin.

While seeing who would choose to kick-off in a clash between Manchester City and Reading in 2018, McNamara picked the alternative after leaving his coin in the dressing room.

Having been banned from officiating for 21 days by the FA, he was later in high sprits having been presented with another one by the Royal Navy FA.
