I dared to give Tottenham’s giant golden cock a pat and recommend Beyoncé does the same

Having visited the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium just weeks earlier, it was nice arriving this time without being 90 minutes away from an inevitable defeat.

As a Portsmouth fan in 2022/2023 trips to Premier League ground away ends are few and far between so January’s FA Cup Third Round Draw was as good as it gets.

I didn’t need a tour for my jaw to be dropped when walking out to safely stand beside 9,000 fellow Blues, at one of Europe’s most stunning football stadiums.

Despite a fairly contested match, a home win was never in doubt but that did little to sour my opinion of the place, and I jumped at the chance to return to the Dare Skywalk.

The giant Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is only a few years old

Before harnessing up and replacing my fresh white trainers with a pair of chunky black Nike beaters, I thought the excitement of the experience lay at the rooftop.

How wrong was I? Having climbed several sets of stairs, one-by-one we were clipped onto a cable running steeply alongside the stadium wall to our left. On our right was an uninterrupted view from across London with nothing to comfort vertigo sufferers.

The fact it starts and ends on such a dramatic gradient definitely adds to the fun.

It’s probably wise to mention at this point that those with a fear of heights may prefer to admire the 62,850 seater stadium from the ground.

If Spurs fans thought their transfer spending was tight…

By the time we made it to the top, I was convinced we had become the coldest people in the capital but at least we weren’t getting battered by rainfall. A heads up though, ascending to the summit of a football stadium in January definitely demands more than two layers.

It was so cold in fact that my head wasn’t turned in the slightest by the mention of a can of Beavertown beer to be enjoyed with a view of the city. Amazing what a chill can do.

Now for the best bit, there it was the towering golden cockerel which looked several miles away from my position behind the opposing corner flag, weeks earlier.

Where I was more at risk of having a Harry Kane penalty blazed across my frozen chops, though, I don’t know.

Fortunately I wasn’t ‘skywalking’ the Al Bayt Stadium at the time

As we dared to peer over the grilled path beneath our feet and the massive drop to the retractable pitch below, our walking-talking encyclopedia of a tour guide shone.

Facts, figures and stories aplenty were shared from a truly unique standpoint. The calculated acoustics of the stadium blew my mind with it designed not only to enhance crowd noise on the inside but minimise it for the club’s neighbours.

No wonder “Play up Pompey” sounded so good, no pressure Beyoncé.

NFL games are not the only US export to be welcomed with open arms by Tottenham, as the pop super star confirmed last week that she’ll be performing at the stadium in May.

If you’re reading Beyoncé, dare the skywalk and give the cock a pat from me.

Spurs fans or not, families after a half term activity may want to check out what the club has going on later this month.

From Saturday 11th to Saturday 18th February, there’ll be football freestyling sessions and face painting activities.

Mascot Chirpy will also be knocking about to keep the little ones entertained.
