Duncan Ferguson ‘cried eyes out’ when pal ‘ripped head off favourite pigeon Super Gran’

Former Premier League hardman and Everton hero Duncan Ferguson cried his eyes out and ended up in a scrap after the head was brutally ripped off his favourite pigeon called Super Gran.

Super Gran was the prized bird of Ferguson’s loft when growing up and he was made to regret lending it out for breeding purposes after learning of its grizzly fate.

“I keep racing pigeons, I’ve had them for a long long time since I was a kid. Back in the day, my favourite pigeon was a pigeon called Super Gran. Believe it or not!

“You can name them, they’re not all flying rats. So I keep pigeons and I still keep pigeons to this day, that calms me. I enjoy spending time with the pigeons.

“My beloved Super Gran, I gave it to a guy I knew at the time, he liked pigeons as well and he wanted a pigeon for breeding.

Duncan Ferguson was not best known for being cool-headed as a player

Duncan Ferguson wasn’t to be messed with on or off the pitch

“I gave him the pigeon and he pulled it’s head off. So about three or four months later I’ve gone round to the lad and asked him have you got my pigeon, he’d pulled the head off it.

“He said it was nae good, he said the pigeon was crap and it was sick or something. I was only a young kid do you know what I mean. Crying my eyes out I was.

“That was probably one of the first times I threw a punch. I ended up scrapping with him because he pulled the head off my pigeon.”

Duncan Ferguson has turned to punditry and is now manager at Forest Green Rovers

The former Everton, Newcastle and Scotland striker isn’t the only sportsman to have a love for pigeons, with Mike Tyson having kept them as pets.

Ferguson went on to explain his love for animals and nature, having spent time racing greyhounds in Scotland having loved fishing as a youngster.

That love might just have helped him in choosing to take up his first permanent managerial role with Forest Green Rovers, where he has pledged to tuck into a vegan burger.
