Alex Scott takes dig at David Beckham when recalling reference to him in her book

Alex Scott has taken a dig at David Beckham while recalling a reference to him in her book ‘How (Not) To Be Strong’.

The former England defender, 38, was speaking at the Attitude 101 Trailblazers event when she opened up about her romance with ex-Arsenal teammate Kelly Smith. Scott publicly recalled how she fell “madly and deeply” in love with the legendary Gunners striker while discussing chapter seven of her memoir.

It was a huge glimpse into Scott’s usually-private love life, with the 38-year-old admitting she almost left out the story. But while reading through the chapter about her same-sex relationship, Scott also took the opportunity to fire shots at England and Manchester United legend Beckham.

“Kelly Smith was a superstar in my world when our paths crossed,” she began by saying. “Think the David Beckham of… actually I should call that back and scrub that out,” before laughter and a round of applause engulfed the room.

Beckham’s unpopularity among the LGBTQ+ comes after the footballing icon caused uproar by signing a whopping £10million deal to become Qatar’s ambassador for the World Cup.

David Beckham was on the receiving end of a stray remark

Beckham was slammed for agreeing to promote a country where homosexuals are persecuted. The feud escalated further when comedian Joe Lycett urged Beckham to pull out of his deal or risk shredding £10,000 worth of money.

The former England captain replied by merely saying: “We understand that there are different and strongly held views about engagement in the Middle East but see it as positive that debate about the key issues has been stimulated directly by the first World Cup being held in the region.

“We hope that these conversations will lead to greater understanding and empathy towards all people and that progress will be achieved.”

Lycett went on to reveal he had bluffed in order to spark a conversation about Beckham’s disappointing involvement with Qatar. Instead, he announced that Beckham was no longer a gay icon and pulled out a cover of gay magazine Attitude with Beckham on the front from 2002 – the first time a Premier League footballer had appeared on a LGBTQ+ mag.

He then shredded the cover after clarifying that he had asked Attitude if he had permission, to which they replied that they were “more than happy to oblige”.
