Rugby League star Joe Westerman has admitted he ‘needs to work on decision-making around alcohol’ after he was filmed performing a public sex act.

The side said: “Following an internal investigation, Castleford Tigers can confirm that Joe Westerman has been issued a substantial fine and will also be required to undertake community service to educate young people on the effects of alcohol.

“This will also involve Westerman educating individuals on the dangers of social media when in the public eye.”

Westerman added: “Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly apologise to my family and friends for my actions. I’d also like to apologise to the supporters, sponsors, staff, and directors of Castleford Tigers as well as my team-mates.

“I’d like to extend this apology to the game of rugby league, and I have realised that I need to work on my decision-making around alcohol.”

The video appeared to show the married dad-of-three engaging in a sex act with a woman in a public alleyway. However, his wife Lauren has since insisted she’s not the woman in the video.

Lauren said, on Twitter: “Can I make this VERY clear that this is NOT me!!!!!!” Before she added: “And we have three children one of whom is almost 15 and she doesn’t need to see things like this all over social media!”

The controversy comes just days before the 2023 Super League, which starts on Thursday.
