Mason Greenwood not expected to play for Man Utd this season as investigation continues

Manchester United hope to complete an internal investigation into Mason Greenwood before the end of the season.

But news that it could go on for several more months means Greenwood is not expected to be seen in a United shirt again during the remainder of this campaign.

Greenwood has been left in limbo because he remains suspended by United – despite all police charges against him being dropped.

The England striker was arrested almost 13 months ago and subsequently charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour.

But the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the charges after certain witnesses withdrew their involvement in the case.

United bosses are now in the middle of a club investigation into the circumstances surrounding the allegations made against Greenwood.

This will involve interviewing Greenwood to ascertain his version of events – as well as getting specialists to look into his mental and physical condition. United hope the process will be completed before the end of this season, but cannot confirm this.

Club bosses have been keen to bide their time before deciding what to do next with the forward. Options on the table include inviting him back to training, offering to pay up his contract or selling him in the summer.

United suspended Greenwood shortly after his arrest, but continued to pay him in full throughout the legal process. He has remained on United’s first team squad list on the club’s official website and has a contract until 2025 worth close to £100,000-a-week.

Mason Greenwood hasn’t played for Man Utd since he was arrested in January 2022

Greenwood, 21, has scored 35 goals in 129 matches for United since making his debut in March 2019. His last match for United was in the 1-0 Premier League win over West Ham on January 22 last year, with his last goal coming in a 3-1 win at Brentford three days beforehand.

Greenwood, whose No11 shirt number has not been allocated to someone else, won his one England cap against Iceland in September 2020.
