‘I was prison pals with road rage killer Kenny Noye – he’s not loveable rogue BBC depict’

A former wingmate of Kenneth Noye disclosed what he was really like behind bars.

Richard Jones was an ex-gym buddy of the road rage killer, who was banged up for almost 19 years for knifing Stephen Cameron to death on the M25 in 1996.

He expected the notorious road rage killer to be “a nightmare” and was stunned by his physical strength.

Other lags were also wary of Noye, who had the nickname “King Kenny” when he was doing time.

But Jones, who was serving seven years in Nottingham’s Lowdham Grange Prison for conspiracy to supply cocaine, found he was actually “quiet”.

Kenneth Noye was played by Jack Lowden in the BBC series

Former soldier Jones explained: “He was very quiet and kept himself to himself. He trained really hard, he was polite, everyone spoke to him.

“He was another one of the lads on the wing. He was left alone to his own devices, he wasn’t getting in trouble, he was respectful towards the prison staff there but then again the prison staff were respectful towards him

“I did train with him a couple of times, then he was about 65, he was extremely fit, very strong and in good shape. He loved playing badminton, tennis. He was very sporty.

“He just kept himself to himself, he used to read his newspaper in the yard, listen to a bit of music, and that was it with Kenny really…

“There were never any dramas with him, he never got involved with prison politics, certainly no one ever had a go with him and I didn’t ever see him have a go with anyone else.

Noye’s new book is called A Million Ways to Stay on the Run

“The thing in prison is everyone is on their best behaviour because they want to get out, especially if you have a life sentence.

“Kenny’s case was a high profile case back in the 90s so he was one of those people on the wing, a high profile characters on the wing, he was one of the ones who you certainly knew a lot about.

“But the reputation from outside kind of sticks but you didn’t ever think of ‘f***ing hell s**t Kenny is suddenly going to be an absolute nightmare’ because he wasn’t.

“He was quiet and respectful, he was the classic case of he’s doing his bird.”

Noye’s character has been a topic of discussion ever since BBC released its drama series The Gold starring Jack Lowden.

Richard Jones said Kenneth Noye was in good shape after training with him in prison

The show tells the story about a £100million heist, dramatising Noye’s connection with the Brink’s-Mat warehouse raid.

But Stephen’s uncle believes the Beeb painted him like “Robin Hood” and a “lovable rogue” – despite him being a “cold-blooded murderer”.

Furious, Gary Cameron said: “The BBC has made Noye out to be some kind of good guy when he is a cold-blooded murderer.

“They have made him out to be some sort of Robin Hood character, taking from the rich.

“I watched the first episode and was disgusted when I saw they have portrayed him as a nice guy, which is completely wrong. It is not how he was. The man is a villain.”

Noye, now 75, was released in 2019 and was said to be “over the moon” after reading the script to The Gold before it aired.

He was first caged for 14 years in 1983 for conspiring to handle some of the stolen Brink’s-Mat gold.

Disgusted, he told the jury “I hope you all die of cancer” after the verdict.

He was released in 1994 but two years later he killed Stephen Cameron, 21, in front of his fianceé.

Noye went on the run and was nicked in Spain in 1998 before receiving a life sentence for murder.

He is now a free man and in a new book said Stephen’s fiancée, who testified against him in court, has “nothing to fear” from him.
