Allan Saint-Maximin given man of the match despite Liverpool win leaving fans puzzled

Footy fans were baffled after Jamie Carragher awarded Allan Saint-Maximin the man of the match in Newcastle‘s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.

It was a bad day at the office for the Magpies, who fell two behind inside the opening 20 minutes after goals from Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo before goalkeeper Nick Pope was sent off soon after for handling the ball outside his area.

Despite playing the remainder of the game with 10 men, Eddie Howe’s side managed to shut up shop and not concede again with the result a formality. Their bright spark throughout was Saint-Maximin, who’s struggled with injury this season.

But even still, Sky Sports viewers couldn’t get their head around co-commentator Carragher’s decision. One tweeted: “Saint-Maximin man of the match is mad. He’s just charged around going nowhere and booted the ball wide.”

“Saint-Maximin getting MOTM for running sideways really fast,” echoed a second. A third wrote: “Carragher chatting some absolute waffle as well. What’s he been on about? Saint-Maximin man of the match???”

“Loads you could say about that game but nothing more important than questioning why Carragher just gave Allan Saint-Maximin MOTM,” added a sixth.

Liverpool beat 10-man Newcastle 2-0 in what turned out to be a formality of a result

Carragher took to social media himself to give his reaction, posting: “Entertaining game at St James’ Park tonight! I thought Newcastle were excellent especially with 10 men and that’s why Liverpool’s best player was the keeper.

“Huge three points though for the Reds which keeps top four hopes alive. Roll on the Champions League on Tuesday!”
