Arsenal fans “now support Forest” after a late goal for Nottingham Forest saw Manchester City drop points in the title race.

The reigning Premier League champions had been in front at the City Ground thanks to Bernardo Silva’s first half goal before Chris Wood equalised for Forest with just six minutes remaining. City’s failure to win leaves them two points behind Arsenal, who beat Aston Villa earlier on Saturday and also have a game in hand over their title rivals.

Gunners fans have joked that they now support Steve Cooper’s side after Wood’s strike gave their title hopes a massive boost.

One supporter reacted by tweeting: “Nottingham Forest hold on hold on I will support you that you won’t relegate this season.” Another added: “I support Nottingham Forest as well… hahaha.”

A third fan wrote: “I be Nottingham Forest fan now ooo.” One more also commented: “I am a Nottingham Forest fan til further notice.”

Wood’s goal was his first since joining Forest from Newcastle United in January, with his initial loan already made permanent after her triggered a clause by playing three matches for the club.

The New Zealand international ghosted in unmarked at the back post to tap home Morgan Gibbs-White’s cross and deny City the chance to return to the top of the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s side had leapfrogged Arsenal into first place on Wednesday night by winning a thrilling encounter at the Emirates Stadium.

However, Arsenal bounced back from that loss by twice coming from behind to beat Villa away from home earlier in the day, a result which now leaves them two points clear of City.

An Emiliano Martinez own goal and Gabriel Martinelli’s strike in stoppage time helped Mikel Arteta’s side to a 4-2 victory after Ollie Watkins and Philippe Coutinho had twice put the hosts ahead in the first half at Villa Park.

Arsenal also have a game in hand over City, which they will play against Everton on March 1, hoping to further extend their advantage in the title race.
