Man Utd fans thank ‘legend’ Ronaldo for leaving and allowing Marcus Rashford to shine

Manchester United fans have thanked Cristiano Ronaldo for leaving and paving the way for Marcus Rashford’s meteoric rise this season.

Rashford played a starring role in the Red Devils’ 3-0 Premier League win over Leicester City on Sunday. The Englishman, 25, netted either side of half time, carrying on from where he left off against Barcelona in midweek with a goal and a crucial involvement for United’s second.

That takes Rashford up to a stunning 24 goals already this season, levelling Ronaldo’s tally last campaign which made him United’s top-scorer.

And the forward’s inspiring performances under Erik ten Hag have led some fans to suggest his former teammate Ronaldo, who had his contract scrapped in November after falling out with the club bosses, previously held him back.

One Twitter user wrote: “It’s funny Man United sack Ronaldo and Rashford starts to shine.”

Fans think Cristiano Ronaldo was holding the Englishman back

Another United fan tweeted: “So Ronaldo was really holding Rashford back. Just as he did to [Paulo] Dybala and [Karim] Benzema,” and a third added: “Special thanks to Ronaldo for removing himself from our club. Legend.”

Rashford is currently enjoying his most prolific season to date. His next best season came back in 2019/20 where he scored 22 in 44 matches across all competitions.

The forward is in fine form

And the forward is not planning on stopping his hot streak any time soon as United trail league leaders Arsenal by five points and rivals Manchester City by three.

Rashford said in his post-match interview: “It’s obviously a nice feeling to be scoring goals and ultimately winning games. I don’t feel like slowing down; I’m just trying to improve.”
