Dad was left paralysed and almost died after eating dodgy chicken bhuna curry

A dad-of-two was left paralysed and nearly died after eating a dodgy curry.

David Miller, 43, tucked into a chicken bhuna his usual Indian takeaway in London.

But he was quickly stricken with severe food poisoning which then morphed into an auto-immune disorder, causing him to lose the use of his limbs.

He also stopped being able to breathe normally and could not walk or see clearly.

Miller, a web contractor now based in Welbourn, Lincolnshire, suffered badly from a stomach bug he got from the curry.

Unsurprisingly, Miller said he has not returned to the curry house

Normally a super-fit avid cyclist, he began feeling a strange tinge in his hands and feet two months later, leading to a near full paralysis and leaving him in a wheelchair after two and a half months in hospital.

He then started feeling tingling in his hands and feet two months later.

This led to near-full paralysis where he couldn’t roll over in bed, needed a wheelchair to get around and spent two and a half months in hospital.

He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome after eating the curry back in 2016.

Seven years on he has recovered, and is due to run his first marathon after the incident.

Miller was hospital bound for months after the incident

He first fell ill in 2016 but has now chosen to speak about his miraculous six-year recovery from the illness.

David said: “It was pretty scary. Obviously we didn’t go back to that restaurant again.

“It was a steep decline – I went from having tingling and pins and needles in my hands and feet to needing a wheelchair to get into hospital a week later.

“Some people die from this syndrome. It works its way from the extremities through your core and can stop your breathing.

“Imagine looking at your body and trying to make it move and it doesn’t.”

But the dark days are now behind him and he is due to run the London marathon in April.

“It makes you think a little bit more about life and focus on the now,” he said.
