Eddie Hearn says it’s wrong Jake Paul will get WBC ranking if he beats Tommy Fury

Promoter Eddie Hearn does not believe it is right that Jake Paul will receive a World Boxing Council ranking in the event he beats Tommy Fury in their long awaited bout on Sunday night.

The pair, who have traded plenty of barbs between each other in recent times, will finally face off against each other in Saudi Arabia following two prior postponements.

Should Paul beat Fury in Saudi, he will earn a WBC ranking for the cruiserweight division, despite having previously never fought a boxer in the ring prior to Saturday night’s bout.

Jake Paul and Tommy Fury will finally meet in the ring on Sunday (February 26)

Eddie Hearn doesn’t feel Jake Paul deserves a WBC ranking even if he does beat Tommy Fury

While the promoter recognises and respects Paul for what he has achieved, Hearn believes it would “not really” be right for the YouTube star to earn a WBC ranking for beating out Fury on Sunday night.

“Sometimes governing bodies have to live in that commercial world as well,” said Hearn.

“Tommy Fury’s a proper fighter and Jake Paul would make a statement if he won that fight. Not a statement that he can challenge for a world title, but, ultimately, there’s a little bit of publicity in there.

“Is it right? Not really. Because there’s fighters that deserve to be in the top 15 much more than Jake Paul, but it’s the world we live in.”

In the past, 26-year-old Paul has fought six times against three MMA fighters, two YouTubers in Deji and AnEsonGib and a former NBA player in Nate Robinson.

There has been much consternation made about the fact Paul will earn a WBC ranking, with Derek Chisora claiming it would be “a disgrace to boxing.”
