‘Mike Ashley bought us Jaegers at Newcastle party and gave me take it or leave it offer’

Former Newcastle United full-back Danny Simpson has revealed Mike Ashley once bought the squads Jaeger Bombs – before offering him a ‘take it or leave it deal’.

Simpson was coming to the end of his three-year stint on Tyneside when he was attending an end-of-season party. The full-back explained his interaction with the business tycoon when appearing on the Undr the Cosh podcast.

He said: “He’s just a ruthless businessman, isn’t he – but, actually, when you meet him, he’s alright.

“I remember at the end of the season, the lads wanted me to stay, but I wasn’t happy with what I’d been offered. We’re at the end of the season party, at the bar, and he’s there, buying us all shots. One of the lads got him to up his offer – I swear to god!

“I was like ‘why couldn’t this have happened three months ago’ at this point things had already been made up. It took Steven Taylor, Tim Krul, and some of the other boys to get into him after a few jager bombs. He was like ‘take it or leave it, I’ll do this’.

“I couldn’t take it seriously, because after that night you all go home…I didn’t want to leave, I loved it up there.”
