Woman shares horrific bullying she’s faced because of her odd-sounding name

A woman, who now goes exclusively by her middle name – Damarys – has shared her experience of childhood bullying due to how her first name sounds like.

Damarys, a 34-year-old from Florida, US, shared some of the sad incidents she faced with her followers on TikTok.

Growing up with that name was so traumatising that caused her to despise her first name to the extent that she refuses to disclose it.

Damarys’ TikTok account is followed by over 130,000 users and her videos attract thousands of views every day.

In some of her videos, she recounted the traumatic memories of being teased as a child because of her name.

In a video that garnered over 241,000 views, Damarys revealed that her middle school teacher once claimed her name sounded like someone using the bathroom.

She said: “Let me tell y’all, I hated my name for so long. In middle school, a teacher in front of the whole class, he said that my name sounded like someone was taking a s***.

“The whole class just started laughing and I just started crying because like, why would you say that?”

This comment triggered further bullying from her classmates.

Once, her dance team members put her first name on the back of her T-shirt, Damarys revealed.

She explained that every dancer had a uniform with a nickname at the back, but on her blouse, they only wrote her actual first name, which they already considered funny.

The incident caused her embarrassment and tears.

She said: “They put my first name on the back of my shirt y’all because they said my name already sounds funny.”

Despite detailing the bullying that came from it, the 34-year-old woman said that uniform prompted teammates to question her about the origin of her supposed nickname.

She added: “They had people coming up to me trying to pronounce my d**n name on the back of my shirt and of course, every time we had to wear that d**n shirt I went in the back and cried.”

Despite recalling these incidents lighthearted and with a smile, Damarys still refuses to disclose her first name.

She defended her stance, stating that she does not owe anyone an explanation.

She said: “So, my middle name is Damarys and I think that should suffice. I’m not going to sit here and tell y’all my first name because y’all [are] not about to bring back childhood trauma.”
