Killjoy councils to ruin coronation bank holiday with odd rules including ‘balloon ban’

A group of killjoy local councils have been warned against ruining street party celebrations held on the day of King Charles III’s coronation.

The big event is set to take place on May 6, and will be accompanied by huge street parties being held up and down the country – as has become tradition with every major toyal celebration.

But according to an investigation from The Telegraph, 10 local councils have been warned by the Government not to be “killjoys” and enforce anti-celebration regulations.

However, despite Whitehall releasing a guide to help stop councils from raining on anyone’s parade, some council’s appear determined to be Grinch-like, such as Guilford Borough Council.

They state regarding street parties: “The Council reserves the right to refuse an application if there are objections which the Council considers to be valid and cannot be resolved.”

Richmond Upon Thames Council has demanded statements from everyone who could be impacted by a street party to confirm that they have agreed to it, otherwise it won’t be allowed to go ahead.

In Medway, the grump councillors require a list of names of all those who object as well as all those who approve of it.

However, they are waiving the normal £100 fee associated with having to close a road – how nice of them.

Also on the list is New Forest District Council who demand Public Liability Insurance be taken out to a minimum of £5million, while Windsor and Maidenhead Council are demanding a £147 fee for road closures, plus extra costs for advertising and signage.

Other angry councils include Epping Forest District Council, Southend-on-Sea (where balloons are banned), Bexley and Buckinghamshire.

And in Swindon, the borough council there has said that it would prefer no street parties at all are held, and urges everyone to go to a park or do it in a garden instead.
