The collision sent the woman flying several metres before landing several metres away in the middle of the road

Witnesses said pedestrian light was flashing red when the woman began to cross, while the oncoming Lexus had a green light.

‘I heard this bang and I walked outside and I saw this girl just thrown across the road,’ Eloise Bartlett told 7News.

The woman had moments earlier said goodbye to friends and was making the short walk home when the accident unfolded.

They were only metres away when they heard the crash and ran back to help her.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the driver reportedly likely to face charges.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Dominic Wong described the incident as ‘one of the most challenging scenes’ he has ever attended.

‘The incident occurred on a busy street and with a large number of bystanders nearby,’ he said.

The driver jumped out of his Lexus and quickly began assisting the woman, who suffered serious head injuries

‘The woman began to rapidly deteriorate while paramedics were treating her and became unconscious.

‘A specialist medical team intubated her on scene before she was taken to hospital with a police escort.’

The woman reportedly underwent emergency surgery on Friday night and was placed into the intensive care unit.

She has since been discharged from hospital.
