Tottenham can ‘destroy another proven winner’ as Spurs ‘eye Zinedine Zidane’

Fed up Tottenham fans are convinced they’ll ‘destroy’ Zinedine Zidane if the Frenchman joins them this summer.

The London club have begun the search for yet another manager following the acrimonious departure of Antonio Conte on Sunday, and Zidane is understood to be high on their wish-list.

He’s one of the most decorated coaches in Europe having won 11 major honours, including three Champions Leagues, across two spells with Real Madrid, but Spurs fans think hiring a ‘proven winner’ like Zidane is pointless given how poorly both Conte and Jose Mourinho fared.

“Perfect. We can destroy another proven winner,” one fan grumbled on Twitter, while another wrote: “Kiss goodbye to your reputation Zinedine if you fancy the Tottenham job.”

A third fan said he thought the move would be an “unmitigated disaster”, commenting: “He’s only coached Real Madrid, with one of the best squads ever assembled. He’d crash and burn with us. Absolutely to be avoided, I hope.”

Another said: “No thank you. We don’t need a ‘name’ for the short term but a manager who genuinely wants to be here and ready to stay for the long run.”

Rival fans felt similarly pessimistic about Zidane’s chances of being a success at Tottenham, with one tweeting: “Zidane should avoid Spurs like the plague. You go there and your reputation is ruined.”

Another wrote: “Tottenham are the weakest of the top six and will soon be overtaken by Newcastle, even Guardiola would struggle to win things there. Zidane would be mad to take the job.”

Whether Zidane is interested in the job remains to be seen, but if he is he’ll likely have to compete with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Julian Nagelsmann for the club’s affections.

Zidane has won the Champions League three times as a manager

The 1998 Ballon d’Or winner has spent the entirety of his coaching career at Real Madrid, having spent a year-and-a-half as manager of their reserve side before being promoted to first team head coach in January 2016.

He led the team to Champions League glory just a few months into his reign, and won the competition twice more in the next two seasons before stepping down in 2018. He returned to the club in 2019, but lasted just two years in the job before stepping down again.
