Anthony McGill can’t stop laughing at strange noise – but ends up missing crucial black

Anthony McGill is into the World Snooker Championship quarter-finals – but not without a strange moment against Jack Lisowski.

McGill triumphed 13-8 against Jackpot, defying a late rally from the Englishman to book his place in the next round against Si Jiuhui. The last-16 clash was not without its moments, particularly in the 19th frame when a bizarre noise from inside the Crucible distracted the Scotsman during a crucial shot.

With the balls set out nicely on the table, McGill looked set to make a significant break as he approached the baize. After potting a red, the 32-year-old left himself with a relatively straightforward black to the corner pocket.

However, his concentration was broken as he lined up the shot as a strange noise swept the Crucible. The noise, which sounded like some sort of coughing, caused McGill to look up in a perplexed fashion.

As the Crucible crowd joined in his bemusement, the Smiling Assassin backed out the shot altogether with a grin on his face. When the noise finally subsided, McGill got back down to play shot, only to miss the pot.

That allowed Lisowski back to the table, and he made no mistake as he took the 19th frame to reduce the arrears to 11-8. McGill soon recomposed and duly took the next two frames to wrap up a deserved 13-8 victory and set up a showdown with Si.

Speaking afterwards, McGill said: “Credit to Jack because he really pushed me hard – he could have been forgiven for giving up at 10-1. It was a good job I had that lead in the end. If it had gone 11-9 he would have kept the momentum, so to go 12-8 was massive and I played that frame well.

“I would love to go all the way to the final this year. But first I have to beat Si Jiahui and I will really be up against it. He is a world class player. I’ll give it my best shot, just as I have in my first two matches.”
