  • The ex-Liverpool defender didn’t realise at first that he had been stabbed
  • He only discovered this fact when he drove home following the incident

Former Liverpool prospect Andre Wisdom has revealed that he didn’t realise he had been stabbed in an attack by an armed gang until he drove home later that evening.

The defender, who was playing for Derby at the time, was stabbed in the head and buttocks by the gang who stole his watch police revealed back in 2020.

Opening up on the incident, Wisdom revealed that the attack took place after a party and was confronted by ‘five guys with balaclavas and knives’ who demanded his watch.

After refusing to hand over his watch, the 29-year-old was the victim of an unprovoked assault and robbery.

However, Wisdom, who is currently without a club, didn’t rush straight to hospital as he didn’t realise he had been stabbed until he drove himself home.

Explaining the confrontation, he told the Beautiful Game Podcast: ‘I was at a place where I shouldn’t have been – at a party.

‘But I think that time of year as it was lockdown I was quite eager to get out outside a bit without doing too much.

‘When I was leaving there were like five guys, with balaclavas, knives and said “give me your watch”.

‘I said “no” so what else happens, we start fighting and yeah that was it. I drove home after the incident and then I realised I’ve been stabbed multiple times.’

When asked if he was by himself, he added: ‘Yeah I drove home by myself. Loads of people came out the party after five minutes of wrestling and they’ve ran off.

‘I’m covered in blood in the street and I’m just like ‘f*** sake,’ gone home and rang the ambulance from my house.’

The attack came in the Beaumont Street area of Toxteth at around 4.30am on Sunday, June 28 – a day after he and his team mates celebrated a 2-1 victory over Reading.

Upon realising he had been stabbed, he was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries which weren’t life threatening.

Police launched an appeal at the time for witnesses to come forward, though Wisdom told the Beautiful Game podcast that he had no information he could give the police himself.

Wisdom has been without a club since the end of the 2020-21 season when his Derby contract expired. Though he did go for trials with Portsmouth, Birmingham City and Sheffield United.

He has admitted that he was ‘not the same’ in his footballing career since he was stabbed.

He said:  ‘It was frustrating as when I’ve come out of hospital after like three days, I had a couple of operations, it was like my body just wasn’t the same.

‘I tried to get back into football and it wasn’t the same, I wasn’t getting the same output in terms of power or speed.

‘It was hard to take and with that comes a lot of other niggles. I got stabbed in the head I got headaches. A little cut here (points to his chest) I couldn’t breathe that well when I came out of hospital because I had fluid on my lungs.

‘I think I rushed coming back to football. So once I could walk, which was like three weeks I went straight back to football. As men we get ahead of ourselves. I played two games and I wasn’t right and my ego wouldn’t let me accept it.

‘It was the last year of my contract and Derby were going through the financial issues so I remember speaking to my agent at the time I was like I’m going to play so I’m in the shop window and then rest in the summer. Then I ripped my groin.’
