Arsenal flop Matteo Guendouzi could be handed surprise Premier League return

Arsenal flop Matteo Guendouzi could be handed an unlikely return to the Premier League through West Ham.

Guendouzi failed to impress during his first spell on these shores – and he moved to Marseille over the summer. The Frenchman hasn’t been part of the Arsenal squad since 2020, when he was shipped out on loan to Hertha Berlin and then Marseille, who he joined permanently.

However, he could be offered a return to England’s top tier as West Ham eye a replacement for Declan Rice, according to The Athletic. Rice’s deal runs out next summer, and the Hammers could be set to cash in on the midfielder this summer.

Rice is expected to leave the London Stadium this summer, with Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Arsenal all interested in his services.

West Ham could still demand a fee north of £100million. It’s believed that a driving factor about wanting to leave is Champions League football.

Speaking ahead of the World Cup in December, Rice revealed: “One hundred per cent I want to play in the Champions League. For the last two or three years I’ve been saying that.

“I’ve been playing consistently well for my club and I feel like I really want to keep pushing. I see my friends here who are playing Champions League and for big trophies.

“You only get one career and at the end, you want to look back at what you’ve won and the biggest games you’ve played in.”

Rice has been West Ham’s man of the moment in recent weeks, driving them out of the drop zone and towards a spot in the Europa Conference League final.
