Champions League teams set for big income boost – but Man Utd could miss out

Champions League teams could be set for an even bigger windfall with the Swiss format – with increased games being broadcast.

Europe’s top competition is set to be extended to 36 teams from the existing 32 teams from the 2024-25 season. As well as the addition of extra teams, the Champions League will also be revamped to incorporate the Swiss Model, which will see one league table, instead of the current eight groups of four format.

And it will help deliver a 33% rise in TV money to €4.8billion (£4.2billion). This will be split among the 36 teams – with some set to take home an extra £30million a season.

This could be bad news for Manchester United, who having suffered two defeats on the spin in recent weeks, with their Champions League spot is under threat.

Manchester City and Arsenal are as good as home and dry, while Newcastle look set to make a return to Europe’s top competition. United had been cruising to a spot, too, but Liverpool’s recent upturn in form has put a return in serious doubt.

Erik ten Hag’s side are now just one point ahead of Liverpool, but they do have a game in hand.

The Swiss Model would mean the Champions League would see 189 games each season – instead of the existing 125. Each team would play eight matches against opponents of different ranks to decide the table.

The single table would then see the top eight teams move onto the knockout round – while positions nine to 24 would enter playoffs for the remaining eight spots. While the next eight spots will drop down to the Europa League.
