Notts County Women’s star listens to Wembley drama at wedding with genius idea

Notts County Women’s captain Holly Fowler had a genius solution after discovering she would be attending her brother’s wedding while the men’s side battled for their spot in the Football League.

Luke Williams’ side finished the season on 107 points, enough to get them promoted in every campaign bar this season – where Hollywood-owned Wrexham pipped them to the top spot. As a result, Notts had to go through the lottery of the play-offs.

Fowler told Daily Star Sport : “I realised about six weeks ago, that if we didn’t go up automatically the wedding would clash with the playoff final!”

Notts had already survived an almighty scare in the semi-finals – leaving it late to overcome Boreham Wood. And they were on the back foot early doors during their day out to Wembley – and Fowler was listening to it all through an earpiece during her brother’s nuptials.

Fowler continued: “The groom’s side of the family [her side] noticed as I kept zoning out throughout the day and touching my ear, they are all also so aware of how much the club means to me and knew I needed to be up to date with the match!”

Fowler, who is a lifelong Notts fan, credits her granddad with her support – even adding they spread his ashes on the centre circle at Meadow Lane.

Notts had to battle back twice, and after 120 minutes nothing separated the Magpies and Chesterfield with the scores locked at 2-2.

Fowler, who was a bridesmaid, added the bride was “lovely” when she shot off to listen to the penalties with her mum, even coming to check on the pair. Fowler added: “She’s aware she’s marrying into a Notts County family!”

After a failed panenka from John Bostock, Cedwyn Scott sealed Notts’ return to the Football League.

The men’s side aren’t the only Notts side to gain promotion this season – and their women’s team, led by Fowler, won the East Midlands Women’s Regional League.

Notts County Women can now look forward to a campaign in Division One Midlands – the fourth tier of women’s football.

Fowler added: “It was a dream to gain promotion as the women’s team captain and lifelong fan! So for the men to do it as well has made this season an absolute dream and one to remember forever!”
