Conor McGregor left close to tears backstage after Khabib Nurmagomedov carnage

New footage of Conor McGregor struggling to hold back the tears after losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov has emerged.

The Irishman was destroyed by the Russian at UFC 229 in 2018 in his first bout at the Octagon since losing his ‘money fight’ against Floyd Mayweather. Unfortunately, his big return was a disaster as Khabib choked the Irishman out in the fourth round – to add insult to injury, Khabib even leapt over the Octagon cage walls and attacked the Irishman’s entourage.

It proved to be an extremely damaging fight for the Notorious, who has been beaten twice by Dustin Poirier since. Nearly five years after that fateful night in Las Vegas, new footage of a crestfallen McGregor has been released.

A backstage video of McGregor sitting on the floor, staring into space and seemingly close to tears while his team and family members consoled him have featured on his Netflix documentary ‘McGregor Forever’. UFC supremo Dana White also came in to offer some words of encouragement for the Irishman, but it was to no avail.

In the documentary, McGregor also admits he did not take Khabib as seriously as he should have done. “Last time I was just not committed, simple as,” he said in the documentary.

“That led to injuries and doubt in the mind. It’s very simple, put in the time and you’ll get the reward back. Set a time to train and then train at that time.

“Set a time to go to sleep and then go to sleep at that time. Set a time to get up and then get up at that time.

“Don’t tell yourself you need to do something and then don’t do it. I knew in my head I was saying ‘get up at this time’ but I didn’t get up at that time. ‘Train at this time’ but I didn’t train at that time.

‘Don’t drink that’ but I drank it. These all just infiltrate my mental strengths. Little defeats instead of wins and they just culminate, so I’m figuring myself out like I never have before.”
