Sheffield Wednesday fan who ripped up tickets says ‘thanks for the nibbles’

A Sheffield Wednesday fan who ripped up his play-off semi-final ticket has said “thanks for the nibbles”.

Wednesday pulled off a miraculous comeback in the second-leg of their League One promotion clash with Peterborough United. The Owls devastatingly lost the first tie 4-0, but saved a historic showing for the home leg at Hillsborough on Thursday.

Having halved their deficit by half-time, Darren Moore’s side fought back to take the tie into extra-time thanks to an emphatic leveller in the eighth minute of stoppage time. The sides traded goals in extra-time, with the thrilling semi-final ending 5-5 on aggregate and going to penalties.

Wednesday went on to win the shootout 5-3 in front of the Kop end, cementing a win that will go down as a classic while setting up a clash with either Barnsley or Bolton in the final.

Yet one Owls fan was left with egg on his face after seemingly ripping up his tickets last week ahead of the dramatic second-leg, having been left gutted with the initial 4-0 drubbing. In a viral video, the Twitter user ripped up his semi-final ticket on camera, much to the anger of other fans online.

Having received over 2million views in doing so, Wednesday fans unsurprisingly went back to give the supporter an earful after their side’s momentous win.

But the fan in question – who had clearly avoided the ticket’s barcode when ripping it up – seemed unfazed as he expressed support for his side.

“Thanks for all the nibbles lads see you at f****** Wembley I love my club,” he tweeted, while also posting a clip of himself kissing a bottle of beer.

The fan has not yet confirmed if he did in fact attend the game, but other Wednesday fans continued to slam him on Twitter.

Another added: “You’ve traded being present watching your club pull off the greatest playoff comeback in history for a few social media interactions.”
