Princess Mary storms ahead of contestants during Royal Run event

Racing Queen! Princess Mary of Denmark shows off her sporting skills as she sprints ahead of contestants during one-mile Royal Run in Nyborg

Princess Mary of Denmark showed off her sporting skills as she took part in the Royal Run in Nyborg today.

The European royal, 51, who was born in Australia, stormed ahead of other participants at the one-mile run in central Denmark.

The mother-of-four arrived dressed for the occasion in a purple short-sleeved running top featuring the Royal Run 2023 branding.

The royal then paired this with a matching white cap and navy blue leggings.

As she stood at the starting line, Mary was pictured with a blue hoodie tied around her waist too.

She finished off her activewear with some thick-soled grey running trainers for the event this morning.

Mary kept her long brown hair out of her face by sweeping it up into a high ponytail.

Keeping her makeup to a minimum, Mary wore some black eyeliner and opted for a peachy lipstick.

After the race, Mary was presented with a bouquet of flowers and was pictured shaking hands with other participants.

The event was supposed to be a one-off sporting challenge in 2018 to celebrate Prince Frederick’s 50th birthday.

However, it proved to be such a hit with the population that the Royal Run has now been held for the past five years and attracts over 70,000 runners.

As well as the one-mile run Princess Mary participated in today, there are also 10km challenges and 5km races across five cities.

Mary famously met her husband Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark by chance at Sydney pub the Slip Inn during the 2000 Olympics.

After their encounter, Fred – who was in Australia to support Denmark’s Olympic sailing team – asked Mary for her phone number and a romance blossomed.

They maintained a long-distance relationship for a year, with Frederik making secret trips Down Under before Mary moved to Denmark to study Danish language at Copenhagen’s Studieskolen in 2001.

In early 2003, Frederik’s mother Queen Margrethe publicly acknowledged the relationship and the couple announced their engagement at Amalienborg Castle later that year on October 8.

Frederik and Mary married on May 14, 2004 at Copenhagen Cathedral, with the newly minted Crown Princess opting for a beautiful gown by Danish designer Uffer Frank and a veil first used by Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden in 1905.

Their first child, Prince Christian Valdemar Henri John, was born October 15, 2005; Princess Isabella Henrietta Ingrid Margrethe followed on April 21, 2007.

Almost four years later Mary and Frederik welcomed twins, Princess Josephine Sophia Ivalo Mathilda and Prince Vincent Frederik Minik Alexander at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on January 8, 2011.
