US Women’s side featuring World Cup winner beaten 12-0 by ex-Wrexham male stars

A U.S. Women’s side featuring a World Cup winner was battered 12-0 by Wrexham Red Dragons that featured ex-male players from the League Two side.

The outrageous victory was part of The Soccer Tournament, a seven-a-side competition that sees 32 teams compete in a World Cup-style event in North Carolina with a $1million (£800,000) prize for the winners.

After winning their first game 3-2 against Como, Wrexham, featuring several ex-male players from the recently promoted side made their mark in the tournament with a thumping 12-0 victory over the U.S. Women side that was comprised mostly of retired USWNT players.

Former Wrexham striker, Lee Trundle, had a two-year stint at the club 20 years ago and still found himself bagging bundles of goals as the 46-year-old netted four in the massive win.

Their opposition, who have been knocked out of the competition, featured Heather O’Reilly who won a World Cup and three Olympic Gold medals during her career.

At half-time, the 38-year-old said that the team are “super proud” to be at the event despite being 7-0 down with the second half to play.

“We’re super proud, so happy to be here at this event, hopefully we’ve proven to anybody, just go for it, just live.

“What’s the worst thing that could happen? We could lose 16-0 to Wrexham? We don’t care. We’re living, we’re being bold, we’re being brave.”

The winning side are set to take home $1m (£800,000) with players including World Cup winner Cesc Fabregas, former Premier League player Carlton Cole and NBA Hall-of-Famer Steve Nash featuring in the tournament.

While the event has brought in players and teams across the world, an allegation of racism towards West Ham’s Frank Nouble from a Dallas United player had the potential to mar the tournament.

A statement by tournament organisers on Thursday (June 1) said: “After conducting an investigation into the final moments of the match between West Ham United and Dallas United, we have concluded that Dallas United violated TST’s code of conduct.

“We have been in dialogue with leadership from both clubs and we are all aligned that the best path forward is Dallas United withdrawing from competition.

“All parties involved are unified in wanting to make a statement against racial insensitivity.”
