Fans gutted to miss out on Phil Neville managing Lionel Messi at Inter Miami

Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami has sent shockwaves around the world of football, but the shockwaves could’ve been twice as big had the deal been confirmed last week.

Six days ago Miami manager Phil Neville was relieved of his duties following a poor start to the MLS season, and fans are absolutely devastated at being denied the chance to witness the dulcet-toned Mancunian bossing around the best player on the planet.

“Phil Neville was 6 days away from getting to tell Lionel Messi what to do,” one fan tweeted. “We could have had Phil Neville managing Lionel Messi! Football can be so cruel sometimes,” commented another.

A third added: “To think; Phil Neville was potentially weeks away from giving Lionel Messi a lesson in how to perform the perfect double stepover. We’ve been robbed of a historic moment.”

A fourth joked: “No wonder Inter Miami sacked Phil Neville with Messi on the way. Imagine Fizzer coaching Messi?!”

Messi revealed on Wednesday that he wanted to return to boyhood club Barcelona, but changed his mind because the club couldn’t guarantee that they’d be able to register him.

“I’m not going back to Barca, I’m going to Inter Miami,” he told reporters. “I wanted to return to Barca but I didn’t want to leave my future in the hands of other people.

“I heard reports of La Liga giving the green light but the truth is that many, really many things were still missing in order to make my return to Barca happen. I didn’t want to be responsible for them to sell players or reduce salaries. I was tired.”

The 35-year-old will join David Beckham’s MLS side after months of speculation surrounding his future. Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal had been the favourites to sign Messi after it emerged they were offering the Argentine a $1billion (£800million) deal over two years.
