Wrexham ’embarrassed’ by Chelsea in pre-season as Rob McElhenney issues message

Wrexham were accused of “embarrassing” themselves as they were thumped 5-0 by Chelsea.

Phil Parkinson’s side kicked off their pre-season tour of the United States on Wednesday (July 19). Mauricio Pochettino named a youthful Blues team to the start the match in North Carolina.

But they still made light work of their League Two opponents, with an Ian Maatsen brace putting them two to the good at the break before Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku and Ben Chilwell added to the scoreline in the second half.

After the match, one rival fan tweeted: “Really embarrassing, stick to your level and test yourself realistically.” But Wrexham supporters took a more positive view despite the result.

“Good run out and a lot of positives to take from the game, we go again and keep improving,” commented one.

Another wrote: “Heads up lads first game, nothing on the line, Prem team. Warmed up now, overall played well just mistakes here and there.”

And one said: “Solid 90 mins to get the legs moving and minutes in. Onto the next one; this is why they’re called pre-season friendlies. Up the Town!”

Should Wrexham be playing teams more on their level? Let us know in the comments section.

Co-owner Rob McElhenney also took to social media to react, thanking Chelsea before he joked: “Hopefully we’ll see you again in five years or so :).”

Parkinson felt “there were a lot of positives”, telling reporters: “The last couple of goals have probably put an untrue reflection on the balance of the game.

Rob McElhenney publicly thanked the Premier League side

“I thought we worked very hard and we had to because Chelsea have so many technical players and against a very good team I thought we had chances.

“We just weren’t clinical enough in that final third, which we are normally good at, but that will come.”

Wrexham are playing four games during their trip to the other side of the pond, with their remaining friendlies against LA Galaxy, Manchester United and Philadelphia Union II.
