Harry Maguire booed after mistake and gets ‘shouted at’ by youth defender

Beleaguered Harry Maguire had the ignominy of being chastised by a youth team player as his Manchester United career hit new depths.

While the defender is firmly out of Erik ten Hag’s plans, he was named in United’s starting line-up for the friendly against Athletic Bilbao in Dublin. Given United’s huge Irish fanbase, it should have felt like a home game for Maguire.

Instead, he found himself being booed during the match after making a couple of sloppy errors. One of those mistakes led to a goal when a poor pass was intercepted. Bilbao broke away with an incisive through ball which was missed by goalkeeper Andre Onana, and Nico Williams found the net.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Maguire also found himself on the end of a tongue-lashing from one of the club’s youngsters. It didn’t go unnoticed that 18-year-old midfielder Dan Gore gave Maguire a piece of his mind.

Sam Luckhurst, who covers United for the Manchester Evening News, tweeted at half-time: “Boos had ended for Maguire by the end of the half but even Dan Gore, 12 years younger, was on his case after he failed to move for a pass. And Gore had a point.”

The moment was also spotted by a number of fans, who believe it is time for the former Leicester and Hull defender to move on, with United recently rejecting a bid from West Ham.

“How embarrassing when you’re a senior pro at the club and getting shouted at by an 18-year-old,” said one supporter.

Another added: “I do not understand why we rejected the offer from West Ham. We’ll never get anything better than 20m for him.”

A third commented: “I really hope Maguire for himself does move on and we lower the asking price. I CBA [can’t be a****] with the British media going on all season about Maguire and asking about him in every Press Conference.

United reportedly want a combined £60m for Maguire and Scott McTominay, with the Hammers said to be interested in both.
