A person is in a critical condition after allegedly igniting themselves at a gas station.

A man who allegedly ignited himself in front of a petrol station in the UK is currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital for injuries that pose a significant risk to his life.

Emergency services were called to the Tesco petrol station on Victoria Avenue East in Blackley, Greater Manchester, at around 7.35pm on Monday (September 4) following welfare concerns, Manchester Evening News reports.

The man was treated at the scene by fire crews and given trauma care before being rushed to hospital, where it is understood he is now being treated for severe burns.

It is thought the patient set himself alight on the forecourt of the petrol station. The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious, but enquiries are ongoing.

Police cordoned off the area for several hours on Monday night with both fire scene investigators and forensics specialists attending the scene.

CSI officers were spotted in the sectioned-off area taking pictures, including of debris found on the ground.

Fire extinguishers and water bottles were also found at the scene along with a suitcase and trainers which were burned in the incident.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 7.35pm, officers were called to reports for the concern of the welfare of a man on Victoria Avenue East, Manchester.

“A man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he remains in a life-threatening condition. A cordon remains in place.”

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service added at the time: “At 7.30pm this evening, firefighters were called to a supermarket on Victoria Avenue, Manchester.

“Two fire engines from Philips Park and Whitefield fire stations arrived quickly at the scene.

“Fire crews helped a male casualty at the scene, including trauma care, before they were conveyed to hospital via our colleagues at North West Ambulance Service. GMFRS remain at the scene.”
